A reflection on how easily we put our health last—until life reminds us how little time we actually have.
This week I was sitting in a room when my friend walked in.
Her face said everything before she even spoke.
“I’m going to the hospital to visit Annie.”
I asked what had happened.
She looked at me and said:
“She’s dying. She’s 47… bowel cancer.”
I felt completely shaken.
Cancer took my grandad before I was even born.
The only memory I have is my mum in her wedding dress, head down, standing over the fresh soil covering his grave.
Since then, I’ve seen more.
Family members diagnosed with cancer.
Strokes. Heart attacks.
And two years ago, one of my personal training clients — just 33 — lost her life after a 13-year battle.
It makes me think:
Are we missing the bigger picture?
We worry about 1lb on the scale…
But not about our heart stopping one day
and our family learning to live without us.
We skip workouts.
We choose takeaway when life gets busy.
Not because we don’t care —
but because the consequences feel far away.
Until one day… they’re not.
We tell ourselves we’re lazy. That we lack discipline.
But often, we’re just stuck in patterns
that pull us further away from the life we could be living.
More energy.
More confidence.
More moments with the people we love.
Watching your children grow up.
Making memories with your parents.
Travelling, hiking, experiencing the world.
And yes — we don’t always choose illness.
But we can reduce the risk.
We can give ourselves the best possible chance.
I’ve lived with four irreversible conditions for 23 years.
There was a time I took 15 tablets a day.
I was lethargic, exhausted, and living with constant, crushing pain — just trying to get through each day.
Changing my lifestyle didn’t fix everything.
But it gave me something back:
more energy, less pain, and the ability to actually live — to travel, to move, to experience life.
It’s easy to focus on how your body looks.
It’s harder to see what’s happening inside —
your joints, your heart, your long-term health.
But that’s what truly matters.
Because this isn’t just about fat loss.
It’s about giving yourself the chance
to live fully, deeply, and for as long as possible.
Don’t wait for the moment when you ask yourself:
“What if I started sooner?”
“What if I took better care of myself?”
“What if I made the change when I had the chance?”
Make that decision today.
Not out of fear —
but out of respect for your life.
Start small if you need to —
go for a walk today, drink more water,
make one better choice at your next meal.
Because those small choices add up.
Losing someone you love is hard.
But slowly losing yourself…
is just as painful.
Written with care and a pinch of tough love,
